Palm Beach County stretches from Boca Raton in the south to Jupiter and Tequesta in the north, and west all the way to Lake Okeechobee. It’s a mix of glamorous island towns, lively downtowns, quiet beaches and farmland. Here’s what to know.
Palm Beach vs. West Palm Beach
Palm Beach is the barrier-island town of Worth Avenue, oceanfront estates and manicured hedges. West Palm Beach is the bigger city across the Lake Worth Lagoon, with museums, nightlife and a walkable waterfront downtown. They’re connected by a few bridges and very different vibes.
Getting Around
- Airports: Palm Beach International (PBI) is close to downtown West Palm. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is an alternative from the south end of the county.
- Trains: Brightline stops in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton with service to Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando. Tri-Rail runs commuter service down to Miami.
- Driving: I-95 and the Turnpike run north–south; A1A is the slow, scenic coastal route.
When to Visit
Season runs roughly November through April, when the weather is drier and the social calendar is packed. Summer brings heat, humidity, afternoon storms and lower hotel rates. Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30.
Beach Know-How
- Respect the lifeguard flags — rip currents are common on the Atlantic.
- Palm Beach County beaches are among the busiest sea turtle nesting areas in the country. Keep lights off the beach at night during nesting season and give nests space.
- Parking near the beach can be limited, especially on the island of Palm Beach. Arrive early or use public lots.
The Local Vibe
Expect a polished, resort-casual style in Palm Beach and Boca Raton, and a more laid-back, surf-and-fishing feel up in Jupiter and Lake Worth Beach. Everywhere, golf, boating and dining out are a way of life.
